Hello boys and girls, and welcome back to my 30-day personal development challenge/case study/inspiring and meaningful spiritual quest. Before starting Day 24, you may have a look at my Day 23 activities and findings (if any). I’ve completed the reading of A New Earth: Awakening to your Life’s purpose and it has been a wonderful mini-journey in the midst of these 30-days. So what more understanding and insights were received from Being whilst I read this book?
What’s It All About?
So the question is, what’s the meaning of life? Our universe (or multiverse?) is said to come from ‘nothing’ billions of years ago in a huge explosion called the Big Bang, and then it continued to expand but at a slower rate, and the theory is it will eventually start contracting and one day return to become ‘nothing’ again. So the entire cycle is birth, expansion, contraction and death, and then perhaps the entire cycle would repeat itself (Why?!).
This cycle can be seen in many natural phenomena, none more obvious than the life of a human being in which first one is born into this world. Then one started ‘expanding’ physically, as well as increasing one’s possessions and experiences. Then comes the reversal in which the body starts to become weaker and finally, death.
So what’s it all about? Why go through all this trouble? It may not be a question that can have a definite answer (because who’s going to confirm it?), there can only be theories, but if something feels right when you hear it maybe that’s the answer, or maybe it’s close enough for you to feel that way.
One theory is that we are here to fulfil our inner purpose (which was discussed in the previous chapter) and bring Being or Presence into this world. It’s important to realize that we are all part of Presence, so when I say allow more Presence in I’m really saying allow more of ourselves (the non-physical part) into this physical reality. And then with Presence we can create and experience the world around us. The purpose? Enjoyment. To play in this physical reality, to have fun with the creation of all kinds of things and to enjoy the pleasures that life has to offer.
Wonderful, Just Wonderful…
It’s been very satisfying, a really wonderful experience to read this book by Eckhart. I think the most important thing I’ve realized, is the importance of allowing space in ourselves for Presence to enter. Most of the time, this space is taken up by thinking. Hence, meditation is one way of bringing more Presence into our lives.
And it’s not just when we’re closing our eyes and placing our attention on the breath that we can allow Presence in, but at any time. Whenever you find yourself waiting in line for something, or when you find your mind wandering when you’re watching TV, become conscious of your breathing, slow down your thoughts, and allow inner space. I tried that for a couple of days, and the effect has been nothing short of great. Tell you about it in one of the coming chapters.
